The UK car industry is urging the government to introduce new incentives for electric vehicles (EVs) due to slowing consumer demand and reliance on existing EV owners. The industry body SMMT is asking the government to revisit the ZEV mandate as only 12% of new buyers plan to switch to EVs in the next three years. Carmakers propose halving VAT on new EVs and aligning public charging VAT with household electricity rates. They face penalties for not meeting the ZEV mandate, which requires 28% of new car sales to be zero emission. The government has pledged to maintain momentum on EV infrastructure and reaffirmed its commitment to banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030.
