Chamber of Deputies approves constitutional bill banning cultivation of GM corn

The final passage of the constitutional reform could trigger retaliation from the U.S., the Agricultural Markets Consulting Group said. The post Chamber of Deputies approves constitutional bill banning cultivation of GM corn appeared first on Mexico News Daily

The Mexican Chamber of Deputies has passed a constitutional reform to ban the planting of genetically modified (GM) corn, proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum. This decision follows a trade dispute where a panel ruled that Mexico's restrictions on GM corn violated the USMCA, potentially leading to increased tensions with the United States, which exports about $5 billion worth of GM corn annually. Mexico previously banned commercial planting of GM corn in 2022 and its use in human consumption in 2023. The reform aims to protect Mexico's biodiversity and native corn varieties, which are considered part of the national identity. However, the reform has faced criticism from a food sovereignty group, Sin Maíz No Hay País, which argues it is insufficient.
