Charities call on Lanarkshire locals for more support for mental illness

Members of the UK Anti-Stigma Alliance – See Me in Scotland, Inspire in Northern Ireland, and Time to Change Wales – are encouraging people across Lanarkshire to play their part in helping to end the shame which so many people feel.

Three charities—See Me, Inspire, and Time to Change Wales—are urging support in Lanarkshire to reduce mental health stigma through their 2024 If It’s Okay campaign. The initiative aims to challenge the shame associated with mental illness. A poll revealed significant stigma, with 36% of UK respondents (28% in Scotland) hesitant to have someone with mental illness care for their child. Language also plays a role, as 20% find terms like 'crazy' acceptable. Volunteers stress the need for understanding, noting that mental health issues don't negate one's capabilities. A survey showed the campaign positively impacted 88% of participants' understanding. The charities encourage mindful language and increased understanding to combat stigma, urging the community to visit the See Me website for further steps.
