True scale of mental health support in Stirling's high schools revealed

Among the reasons for pupils seeking support included anxiety, low mood, body image and self-harm.

Almost 1,000 students in Stirling’s seven high schools accessed mental health support over a year, with primary reasons including anxiety, low mood, relationships, and self-harm. An average of 210 weekly counselling hours was provided, with the highest usage among S2 to S4 students, particularly S3. Schools made the most referrals, and councillors highlighted concerns about suicide prevention for S5 and S6 students. The council emphasized ongoing suicide prevention efforts, including an online service, Kooth, accessed by 231 young people in 2023/24. Additional services included primary school counselling, therapeutic support, staff training, and family support programs.
