Check for Council Tax help before new higher payments start next month

National charity offers help to people struggling with Council Tax payments and other debt worries.

Council Tax bills in Scotland are set to rise next month, with Glasgow increasing rates by 7.5%. Advice Direct Scotland, a national charity, is urging residents struggling with payments to seek help before the new rates take effect. The charity offers support to manage Council Tax debts, which are classified as a priority debt, and can lead to enforcement measures like wage or benefit arrestments if unpaid. People are encouraged to contact their council to arrange smaller payments or apply for Council Tax Reduction schemes, which can lower bills for those on low incomes, students, or those with disabilities. The Scottish Government reports that 458,470 people were eligible for Council Tax Reductions in December 2024, saving an average of £850 annually. Assistance is available through Advice Direct Scotland’s website, moneyadvice.scot, or by phone at 0808 196 2316.
