China Condemns Trump’s ‘Tariff Shocks’ at World Trade Organization Meeting

At a World Trade Organization (WTO) meeting, China's Ambassador Li Chenggang criticized U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs, warning they could trigger a global recession. This was the first meeting since the 2024 U.S. election to address global trade issues. Delegates noted China's efforts to rally support against Trump's tariffs and position itself as compliant with WTO rules, despite being a major economy. U.S. envoy David Bisbee accused China of violating WTO rules and engaging in predatory trade practices. Trump had imposed tariffs on Chinese imports, reflecting his skepticism of the WTO. The new U.S. Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, urged other countries to lower import barriers and criticized China for not fulfilling its trade deal terms.
