Hyundai, Kia Plan to Boost American Auto Production to Avoid Trump Tariffs

Hyundai and Kia plan to significantly increase U.S. automobile production to circumvent President Trump's proposed 25% import tariffs. Both companies aim to boost domestic production by 70%, leveraging their Georgia plant, which will open in March. Hyundai's executive, Koo Za-yoong, emphasized the goal of localizing production to mitigate tariff impacts, with the Alabama and Georgia plants capable of covering up to 80% of U.S. production. South Korea, highly reliant on auto exports, could face significant export declines and financial losses if tariffs are imposed. Kia is exploring shifting production to Canada, while Hyundai may use its U.S. expansion as leverage in negotiations with Trump. Other automakers, including GM Korea and Nissan, are also assessing strategies to adapt to potential tariffs.
