China unveils world’s first oil production ship with carbon capture facilities

The floating production storage and offloading unit carries technology designed to mitigate its environmental impact.

China has unveiled the world's first offshore oil production and storage vessel equipped with carbon capture and storage technology. The 330-meter-long floating production storage and offloading unit (FPSO), developed by state-owned Cosco Ocean Shipping Heavy Industry Company, can capture carbon dioxide emissions and generate electricity from exhaust gases. With a production capacity of up to 120,000 barrels of crude oil per day, the vessel marks a step toward meeting China's carbon emissions targets. The unit, reported by state broadcaster CCTV, is set to be delivered by the end of February 2025.
