Chronic backlogs in international protection applications may encourage people to claim asylum

The Department of Justice said during 2024 just 1,200 decisions were being made each month while 1,800 new applications were being made.

Irish Department of Justice officials stated that chronic asylum application backlogs encourage more applications, with 1,200 decisions made monthly against 1,800 new applications. They requested increased funding to process 2,800 IPO decisions and 1,500 IPAT determinations monthly by end of 2025 to meet EU Migration Pact requirements of decisions within six months. Accelerated processing for some countries reduced applications by 70%.
