Record number of people in international protection system died last year

In over a third of all cases, a cause of death is not available, while 15 are attributed to accidents, poisonings and violence.

A record 14 asylum seekers died in Ireland's international protection system (IPAS) in 2024, with 3 additional deaths in the first six weeks of 2025. Since 2002, 131 people in the system have died, including 31 children. The number of people in IPAS has risen sharply, reaching 33,007 in February 2025, compared to 7,224 in December 2021. Many are in emergency or tented accommodation due to strains on the system.
