DOGE, led by Elon Musk, has announced efforts to simplify the federal government's credit card program, which saw $39.7 billion spent in FY2024 across 4.6 million cards and over 90 million transactions. This represents a $7 billion increase from FY2022, with a corresponding rise in transactions from 78.5 million. An audit revealed that 12% of FY2023 purchases may have violated Pentagon policies, including unauthorized transactions totaling over $500,000. The GSA SmartPay program serves over 250 federal entities and Native American tribes.
