DOGE Puts $1 Spending Limit on Government Employee Credit Cards

The restrictions are already in place at the General Services Administration along with several other agencies. Soon they’ll roll out to most of the federal government, sources say.

DOGE, under Elon Musk, has implemented a $1 spending limit on government credit cards for the General Services Administration (GSA) and at least three other federal agencies, with plans to expand this policy across the entire federal government. A memo from the GSA indicates that only a small percentage of employees may receive higher spending limits, contingent on justification. The SmartPay program, managed by the GSA, is the largest government charge card program. DOGE aims to reduce costs and simplify the credit card program. However, employees express concerns about potential workflow disruptions and the effectiveness of existing safeguards against fraud. These concerns are bolstered by past instances where DOGE misinterpreted data, such as incorrectly identifying Social Security recipients as being 150 years old.
