Downing Street rejects ‘chainsaw’ characterisation of Civil Service reforms

‘There is no approach here where we are taking a chainsaw to the system,’ the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said.

Downing Street refuted claims that Civil Service reforms are a "chainsaw" approach, despite plans for a smaller, more digitally-focused Civil Service with more jobs outside London. The government aims for one in ten civil servants to be in digital or data roles by 2030. Unions oppose the reforms, while Labour has also proposed Civil Service changes. The "chainsaw" characterization references Elon Musk and Javier Milei's symbolic use of chainsaws to represent government cuts.
