Duelling income tax cuts: What you need to know about the election’s first key promises

Are Canada’s lowest-income filers being left out of the benefits?

The Liberal and Conservative leaders in Canada's 2025 election are proposing income tax cuts to the lowest tax bracket. The Liberal plan would reduce the rate by one percentage point, saving two-income families up to $825 annually and costing $5.9 billion. The Conservative plan would cut the rate by 2.25 percentage points, saving the average family $1,800 annually and costing $7 billion initially, rising to $14 billion per year, funded by spending cuts. Both plans target the first income bracket (up to $57,375), impacting income above the Basic Personal Amount ($16,129).
