Energy regulator proposes rules for data centres to supply electricity to the national grid

The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) is proposing a measure to ensure new data centres do not put pressure on existing electricity supplies.

The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) in Ireland has proposed new rules requiring new data centers to supply electricity to the national grid, aiming to prevent strain on existing infrastructure. Currently, data centers consume 21% of energy, projected to rise to 30% by 2032. Under the rules, new data centers must supply electricity to the market and support their operations, with EirGrid and ESB Networks assessing grid constraints and publishing relevant information. Data centers can choose their electricity generators but must report on renewable energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions. The rules apply to new connections, with existing ones unaffected. The CRU plans to publish the proposed decision on Tuesday.
