According to the Deutsche Bundesbank, the number of counterfeit banknotes in circulation increased by 28% last year compared to the previous year, with 72,413 fake notes removed. This rise is observed both in Germany and across the Eurozone. Most counterfeit notes are easy to detect, including examples like 10 and 20 Euro notes marked as "MovieMoney" or "Prop copy." Despite the increase, the financial loss decreased from 5.1 million Euros in 2023 to 4.5 million Euros last year. In Europe, the loss slightly rose from 25 million to 26.2 million Euros. The risk remains low, with nine counterfeit notes per 10,000 people in Germany and 16 in Europe. The Bundesbank advises against circulating counterfeit money, as it is a crime, and encourages handing them over to authorities.
