Funding for delivery of 3,000 affordable and social homes a ‘statement of intent’

Possibility of tax incentives for private property investors not discussed by Cabinet sub-committee

The Irish government is providing an additional €450 million to fund the delivery of 2,226 affordable and 736 social homes, a move Housing Minister James Browne calls a "statement of intent". The funding will be released to schemes that can deliver homes quickly. Sinn Féin questions if the homes are additional to existing targets, while the Department of Housing confirms the funding has not been previously allocated. The funding is expected to be fully expended by 2025, with additional commitments for 2026. Discussions also included the role of Irish banks in financing house building and criticisms of government housing policy.
