Fury as Orkney Council set to increase council tax bills by an eyewatering 15%

Orkney Island residents have been left reeling after their local council confirmed its intention to hike council tax by a jaw-dropping 15 per cent in what is one of the nation's largest rises.

The Orkney Islands Council has sparked fury by increasing council tax bills by 15%, one of the largest rises in Britain. Despite backlash from residents, the council approved the hike, with a councillor noting unprecedented anger over the decision. The increase, the highest in Scotland, will raise the average band D bill to £1,574.60 annually. The council also raised councillors' salaries, with leader Heather Woodbridge's pay rising to £47,363. Critics warn the hike will disproportionately impact vulnerable communities, with over 1,000 residents signing a petition to scrap the plan.
