Gaeltacht groups protest over housing crisis ‘that has led to depopulation’

Airbnb holiday rentals put home ownership and even rental out of reach for many

Gaeltacht community groups, language activists, and students protested at government and council offices over a housing crisis causing depopulation and weakening the Irish language. Organized by Tinteán, the protests targeted the Department of the Gaeltacht, Galway County Council, and Údarás na Gaeltachta, citing government inaction and the impact of Airbnb-type rentals. Protesters seek stronger support for Údarás na Gaeltachta, stricter council guidelines to preserve Irish, increased social and affordable housing, and Gaeltacht-specific population and housing strategies. In Galway, Bánú submitted a letter demanding a review of housing and planning policies to protect the Gaeltacht's linguistic heritage.
