Girl, 16, accused of terror investigated by MI5 until death, inquest told

Rhianan Rudd, 16, was charged with terror offences after saying she wanted to blow up a synagogue.

Rhianan Rudd, a 16-year-old girl with autism, was charged with terror offenses after threatening to blow up a synagogue. She was investigated by MI5 from October 2020 until her death in May 2022. Her charges were dropped five months before her death after it was discovered she had been groomed by a neo-Nazi. Rhianan was found dead at a residential home with a ligature around her neck, believed to be a suicide. MI5 continued to monitor her despite the dropped charges, considering her a subject of interest. MI5 was aware of her vulnerability and self-harming tendencies but lacked a statutory duty to safeguard her. They shared intelligence with the FBI regarding her communications with a far-right extremist. The case highlighted complexities, including the rare overlap of police and Prevent investigations. MI5 officers expressed discomfort about investigating children but continued due to perceived risks. The inquest into her death is ongoing.
