Godstone sinkholes: Major incident declared in Surrey as second crater opens up in street

Concerns grow as original sinkhole continues to grow forcing evacuations of homes

A major incident was declared in Surrey after two sinkholes opened on Godstone High Street. The first sinkhole appeared on Monday night due to a burst water pipe and expanded to at least 20 meters by Tuesday. A second sinkhole formed on the opposite side, consuming a driveway. Godstone High Street remains closed between Oxted Road and Bletchingley Road junctions, with residents advised to avoid the area. Around 30 properties are affected, and residents are being supported with accommodation. The Local Resilience Forum is managing operations, supported by Surrey County Council.
