Gross failure by three midwives to provide basic care led to baby girl's death, coroner says

A baby girl died after midwives at Royal Lancaster infirmary failed to provide basic medical care as she struggled to breathe in the first minutes of her life, a coroner has found.

A coroner determined a baby girl, Ida, died due to gross failures by three midwives to provide basic care after they failed to identify an abnormally slow foetal heart rate. The lead midwife's resuscitation efforts were deemed 'wholly incompetent', contributing to brain damage. The coroner identified eight missed opportunities to save Ida, finding she could have survived if delivered earlier. A previous report highlighted numerous failings in Ida's care. The coroner criticized the hospital trust's lack of compassion and honesty towards the family, citing an ineffective system.
