Historic Welsh building left empty for 50 years to get new lease of life

The building was a focal point of the Tonypandy riots in 1910 and is now in a poor state of repair

The Rhondda Powerhouse, a Grade II-listed building in Wales and site of the 1910 Tonypandy riots, will be converted into 44 apartments, with two additional apartment blocks of 24 apartments to be built on the site. The redevelopment, approved by the Rhondda Cynon Taf planning committee, aims to save the derelict building, which has been abandoned for 50 years, though concerns remain over the lack of affordable housing and the design of the new apartment blocks.
