Hong Kong health chief confirms patients may pay separate fees for scans like MRI

Health minister Lo Chung-mau says separate fees will be part of ‘significant’ reforms to healthcare subsidy model.

Hong Kong's health chief announced the government is considering charging separate fees for services like CT and MRI scans at public outpatient clinics to address rising demand and long wait times. Hospitalized patients and emergency room visitors would be exempt. The move aims to implement a "reasonable co-payment" system, with earnings supporting patients with serious illnesses, and to prevent potential abuse of the currently free service.
