Hong Kong’s top court upholds sedition conviction for ‘Fast Beat’ Tam Tak

Hong Kong’s top court upheld the sedition conviction of Tam Tak-chi, known as "Fast Beat," ruling that intent to incite violence isn't necessary for a sedition conviction. Tam is serving a 53-month sentence for conspiracy to subvert state power through an unofficial primary election. The court also rejected his argument for a jury trial under the sedition law. Previously sentenced to 40 months in 2022 for offensive acts post-2019 protests, Tam's legal team argued the prosecution needed to prove intent, but the court stated this was only one of seven seditious intentions. Tam was a vice-chairman of the opposition group People Power.
