Hospital worker who took pressure cooker bomb into maternity ward jailed for life

Mohammad Farooq was only stopped after being talked down by patient Nathan Newby

Mohammad Farooq, a hospital worker, was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 37 years for taking a pressure cooker bomb, modeled after the Boston Marathon bombs but with twice the explosives, into St. James’s Hospital in Leeds in January 2023. He intended to kill nurses after failing to access RAF Menwith Hill. He planned to detonate the bomb during a staff shift change, but was thwarted by a patient. Farooq had become self-radicalized online and obtained bomb-making instructions from an Al Qaeda magazine.
