Indian police in Kashmir have seized over 650 books from bookstores, targeting literature promoting the ideology of Jamaat-e-Islami, a banned organization. The books, authored by Abul A’la Maududi and published by a Delhi-based affiliate of the group, were confiscated based on credible intelligence. This action follows the 2019 ban of Jamaat-e-Islami, which the organization deems unconstitutional. Critics, including Kashmir’s chief cleric Umar Farooq, condemn the crackdown as absurd, especially in the digital age. The seizures highlight tensions in the Kashmir conflict, where Jamaat-e-Islami's military wing, Hizbul Mujahideen, has been active since 1989.
