In unprecedented move, Ireland's psychiatrists say CAMHS 'urgently' needs to be overhauled

Psychiatrists warn that CAMHS is ‘under-resourced, under pressure, and under-performing’.

Irish psychiatrists are urgently calling for a major overhaul of CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services), citing serious governance deficits, under-resourcing, under-performance, and lost trust. Recommendations include specialist CAMHS-specific training for all staff, specialist psychiatrist leadership for each team, creation of a Clinical Service Manager role, clearly defined roles and accountability within multidisciplinary teams, and improved digital infrastructure. They warn of over-reliance on medication without therapy.
