Joey Barton was found guilty of assault for kicking his wife in the head during a drunken argument at their London home in 2021, leaving her with a head injury. Despite his wife initially reporting the assault in a 999 call and to police, she later retracted the allegation and defended him in court. The judge dismissed her revised account and explanation of the injuries as unbelievable. Barton received a 12-week suspended prison sentence.
