Denmark is transitioning from a focus on transatlantic security ties to a stronger emphasis on European defense integration, marking a significant shift in its foreign policy. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has highlighted the importance of aligning with European values and enhancing the continent's military and economic strength. This shift contrasts with her previous eurosceptic stance, during which she opposed EU spending and joined the 'frugal' group in the EU. Denmark's historical exemptions from certain EU policies, established under the Maastricht Treaty, are now under reconsideration. This change is driven by concerns over U.S. actions regarding Greenland and Denmark's recent characterization as a "bad ally." This pivot reflects a broader reevaluation of Denmark's role within the EU and its approach to security and defense.
