Labour accused of 'capitulating' to tech giants and 'betraying our children' after plans to ban smartphones in schools are scrapped

Proposed legislation, known as the Safer Phones Bill, has been introduced to Parliament by Labour backbencher Josh McAlister.

Labour is accused of capitulating to tech giants and betraying children by weakening the Safer Phones Bill, which aimed to ban smartphones in schools and regulate their use by under-16s. Critics claim the revised bill is a "hollowed-out gesture" due to government pressure, while supporters argue it's a necessary step towards protecting children from excessive screen time. A government feasibility study on the impact of smartphones is due in May.
