The carer says he tried not to land on his client, but ‘somehow he had gone underneath me’
Michael Parker, a man with Down syndrome, died on June 12, 2023, after his support worker, Harry Beckwith, landed on him while jumping into a swimming pool in Spain. Beckwith stated he tried to avoid Parker but ended up on top of him. Parker was brought to the pool's shallow area, but he later died from the incident. Beckwith had received some safety training but no specific lifeguard training or training on communicating with individuals with Down syndrome.
