Many special needs students struggle to access career advice at second level, finds study

Research tracks experiences of vulnerable young people and level of support offered by schools

An ESRI and National Council for Special Education study found that many special needs students struggle to access helpful career advice at second level, impacting their post-school decisions. School type and family background influence students' pathways, with some feeling pushed towards certain options. While students generally have positive school experiences, preparation for independent living and career decisions needs improvement, especially for those with multiple conditions. Collaborative approaches and parental engagement are beneficial, but barriers to work placements exist.
