Measles cases in Ontario have nearly doubled over the last 2 weeks

Ontario is reporting 84 new measles cases over the last two weeks, nearly doubling the province's total count since an outbreak started in the autumn.

Measles cases in Ontario have nearly doubled over the last two weeks, with 78 new cases reported, bringing the total confirmed cases this year to 119 and probable cases to 23. This surpasses the 101 total infections recorded in Ontario between 2013 and 2023. The outbreak, which began in October, has affected 177 people in Ontario and spread to New Brunswick and Manitoba. Quebec has also reported 27 cases since December. One of the new cases involved an unvaccinated child who contracted measles outside Canada and required hospitalization. The spread is attributed to a global rise in measles, reduced vaccination rates, and increased international travel.
