‘Measles is back’: Cases double in Europe, hitting highest rate in decades

Majority of those infected were unvaccinated or had unknown vaccine status, say WHO and Unicef

Measles cases in Europe doubled in the last year, reaching a three-decade high with 127,350 cases and at least 38 deaths, attributed to Covid-19 vaccination delays and misinformation. Romania had the highest number of cases, followed by Russia and Kazakhstan, with a notable increase in Ireland and the UK as well. Vaccination rates have declined, leaving many unvaccinated or with unknown status, especially children under five, vulnerable to the disease and its complications.
