Men who broke Paddington Bear statue ‘antithesis’ of what he stands for – judge

The RAF engineers carried the broken half through the town into a taxi which took them and the statute back to their base in Hampshire.

Two RAF engineers, Daniel Heath and William Lawrence, damaged and stole a Paddington Bear statue in Newbury, Berkshire, after a night of drinking. They were caught on CCTV ripping the statue off a bench and carrying part of it away. A judge sentenced them to a 12-month community order, condemning their actions as "wanton vandalism" and "the antithesis of everything Paddington stands for".
