Mount Street community group threatens legal action over asylum housing proposal

Department confirms offer was made for accommodation centre at Dublin property but says no decision made

A Mount Street community group is threatening legal action to block a proposal to convert the former Irish League of Credit Unions headquarters into asylum seeker housing. The group, established in March 2024, feels unheard by the government and is concerned about the addition of 700 people to an area already housing the International Protection Office, after the removal of over 200 asylum seekers' tents in May 2024. A company named Lower Mount Street Accommodation Services Limited reportedly applied for permission to convert the ILCU office block into International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) housing. The Department of Integration states community engagement typically happens later in the process.
