New DWP plans to help people on Universal Credit classed as ‘not fit for work’

The number of people on the highest rate of Universal Credit with no support to look for work has almost quadrupled since the pandemic.

The DWP is addressing a significant increase in Universal Credit claimants classified as "not fit for work" (LCWRA), which has quadrupled since the pandemic, particularly affecting young people. The government aims to reform the welfare system to provide support and incentives for those who want to work, moving away from the current binary system that can trap people on benefits. Plans include reforms to the Work Capability Assessment and investments in healthcare and mental health services to address health-related inactivity.
