N.S. bill for protected Acadian riding fails to address voter parity: business group

A bill that would allow the Nova Scotia government to carve out a protected riding for the Acadian region of Chéticamp has passed the committee stage without changes.

The Nova Scotia government's bill to create a protected riding for the Acadian community of Chéticamp passed the committee stage without changes, despite concerns from the Halifax Chamber of Commerce about voter parity. The bill aims to address a November 2022 Supreme Court ruling that found Charter rights related to voting and representation were violated when Chéticamp was excluded from protected riding status in 2019. The Chamber argued that protected and rural ridings have fewer voters than other ridings, particularly in Halifax, and that the new riding could further dilute voter parity. The Acadian community and the Federation of Nova Scotia stressed the importance of the bill in ensuring cultural recognition and effective representation for the community.
