Only Canada, N.S. flags allowed outside schools on Nova Scotia’s South Shore

Peter Day, head of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union, said some teachers are upset that flags representing Mi’kmaq, African Nova Scotian and LGBTQ+ students will be taken down.

A Nova Scotia education center mandated that only Canadian and Nova Scotian flags can be flown outside South Shore schools. The Nova Scotia Teachers Union is concerned, as it means flags representing Mi’kmaq, African Nova Scotian, LGBTQ+, and other communities were removed from flagpoles. The center says the decision was made to protect flags from damage, and that flags representing diverse communities will be displayed inside the schools instead. They also cited the time and cost of maintaining multiple flags.
