Opening of Arctic naval refuelling facility in limbo, DND acknowledges

The Nanisivik Naval Facility was initially announced in 2007, with a targeted opening of 2012, but construction didn’t begin until 2015 and the opening of the installation has been continually delayed.

The Nanisivik Naval Facility, announced in 2007 with an initial target opening in 2012, faced delays as construction began only in 2015. The Department of National Defence (DND) had previously suggested opening in 2024, but the Auditor General noted a 2025 target. Currently, DND acknowledges no specific opening date, citing short construction seasons, harsh weather, COVID-19 restrictions, and a washed-out road in 2021. Despite delays, DND asserts the Royal Canadian Navy's operational capability remains unaffected, with alternative refueling options available. The facility's strategic importance is underscored by the Arctic's growing significance as a potential major shipping route by 2050, as highlighted in the Liberal government's updated defense policy.
