Plans to base combat jets at Shannon airport at annual cost of €100m

Simon Harris says he is convinced of need to acquire combat jet aircraft to ‘deter and detect’ airborne threats as part of massive increase in defence spending

Ireland plans to base combat jets at Shannon Airport at an annual cost of €60-€100 million as part of increased defense spending. Tánaiste Simon Harris advocates acquiring the aircraft to deter airborne threats and has requested plans for tripling the defense budget. The new air force would operate at least eight combat aircraft for 24/7 air policing, maintained by civilian companies.
