Private Moon lander dies on lunar surface after second failed landing

Private Moon lander Athena, developed by Intuitive Machines, failed its second landing attempt on the lunar surface. The lander, launched last week, missed its target by over 800 feet and landed in a frigid crater. Equipped with a NASA ice drill, drone, and two rovers, Athena is unlikely to recharge its batteries due to solar panel positioning and extreme cold. This marks Intuitive Machines' second failed mission; their first attempt a year ago also resulted in a sideways landing. Meanwhile, Firefly Aerospace successfully landed its Blue Ghost lander under NASA's commercial lunar delivery program.
