Report highlights scale of Ontario mineral exports as tariffs threaten trade relation
A report by the Ontario Mining Association and the provincial government reveals that Ontario exported $42 billion in minerals to the U.S. in 2023, representing two-thirds of the province's $64 billion in global mineral exports. The industry contributed almost $24 billion to Ontario's GDP, or three per cent of the province’s total. Trade tensions and potential tariffs threaten the industry and highlight the need for diversification of trade partners and government support. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has threatened to cut off nickel exports to the U.S.
