Launched in November 2023, it achieved significant milestones in its first 14 months, collecting over 3.5 billion packaging units and preventing 230,000 tons of waste from landfills. The system boasts high public awareness, with 98% of citizens aware and 60% actively participating. It has also driven economic growth, creating over 800 jobs and investing 60 million euros in infrastructure.
Recent legislative changes include the removal of a producer fee, extended deadlines, and stricter retailer regulations. Romania aims to boost its collection rate from 65% to 85% by 2025. The SGR's success is highlighted by its comparison to established systems in Germany, Sweden, Finland, and Norway, showcasing Romania's role as a sustainability leader in Europe.
