School cleaner unfairly fired over ‘hazardous’ bucket is awarded €5,000

WRC makes the award after finding ‘implausible’ school’s principal claim he was ‘in fear for his life’

Christina Doyle, a school cleaner, was unfairly dismissed after being accused of leaving a bucket of diluted bleach in a hallway. The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) found the school's claim that the principal feared for his life due to a threat from Doyle "implausible" and awarded Doyle €5,000 in compensation for unfair dismissal, equivalent to just under 42 weeks' wages. The WRC rejected the school's argument that Doyle had resigned.
