Scots furniture tycoons' hit with ban after going bust owing customers goods worth £100K

George and Williamina Hay, from Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, took orders for adjustable beds and chairs - most of which were from 'elderly and vulnerable' people and were not placed with suppliers.

Scots furniture firm DWH Trading Ltd, run by George and Williamina Hay, went into liquidation, owing customers £100,000 worth of goods. The couple, who took 55 orders for adjustable beds and chairs, primarily from elderly and vulnerable customers, failed to place these orders with suppliers. The Insolvency Service found that the directors should have known the orders would not be fulfilled. DWH Trading had a bank balance of less than £6,000 and no non-cash assets. The company owed £143,000 to creditors, with £97,000 owed to customers for undelivered goods. The Hays were banned as directors for seven years, with the ban taking effect on March 3, 2023. George Hay stated it was not intentional and blamed poor health for their disqualifications.
