Six elephants killed after train collides with herd in Sri Lanka
Six elephants, including four calves and two adults, were killed when a passenger train collided with a herd near Minneriya National Park in Sri Lanka. The incident occurred near a wildlife sanctuary, where the train derailed after the collision. This tragic event highlights the growing issue of train collisions involving elephants in Sri Lanka, with nine elephants killed by trains in 2024 alone. Elephants, revered in Sri Lankan culture, are increasingly endangered, with their population declining from around 14,000 in the 19th century to 6,000 in 2011.
