Special avalanche warning issued for large swath of Rockies west of Calgary

Recent storms leaving accumulations over weak layers of snow cause for concern, officials warn

A special avalanche warning is in effect until at least March 24 for a large area of the Rocky Mountains west of Calgary, including Banff, Yoho, Kootenay, and Jasper National Parks, and Kananaskis Country. Recent snow over a weak snowpack has created dangerous avalanche conditions, with potential for human-triggered slides even in forested areas. The warning follows two fatal avalanches on March 14 and urges extreme caution and preparation in the backcountry.
