Spruce Meadows at 50: Small dream, big ambition has led to world

The Southern family's dream of bringing equestrian sports to Calgary has grown into much more, cementing its place among the city's changemakers

Spruce Meadows, founded 50 years ago by Marg and Ron Southern from a small dream, has become a world-class equestrian facility and an integral part of Calgary. Starting with an 85-acre feedlot, it has expanded to over 500 acres and hosts major events like the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping. Under the leadership of Linda Southern-Heathcott, Spruce Meadows has expanded to include the Cavalry Football Club and a new concert series, while maintaining its commitment to community and diversity.
